Dependency structures in language processing and development

Abstract: Dependencies and hierarchical relationships are central elements of linguistic structure and thus also play a central role in language processing and language development. In this talk, I present recent research on children’s processing of syntactic dependencies in sentence comprehension and production, including the parsing of case markers in Basque and the planning of phrase structure in German. Taking a broader perspective on hierarchy in language and cognition, I will also talk about the role of prosodic structure in speech tracking and about the development of tracking event relations throughout childhood.
