In the past decade, the issues of syntactic structure representation and syntactic structure building during real-time language processing have been at the forefront of cognitive neuroscience of language. I will review the insights accumulated from studies that used a frequency-tagging paradigm with restricted language materials. I will then discuss how the insights gained from this constrained scenario were extrapolated to natural language and the challenges that arose as a result. I will conclude by pointing out a potentially fruitful direction in the search for neural mechanisms of syntactic structure building.
