22.08.2022New paper by Joseph Mine & Simon Townsend on communication used for cooperative hunting in chimpanzees

This paper tackles the interplay of vocal communication and complex cooperation in a wild ape, shedding light on the co-evolution of these traits in the primate lineage. In our long-term study spanning 24 years of hunting data, we show that when chimpanzees produce hunting-specific vocalisations during the hunt, they are more effective at hunting. We infer that our last common ancestor with chimpanzees, roughly 7mya, already used communication to mediate group-level cooperation.
